Valentine's Day Artwork

Wow, I have been hibernating ! No posts at all for a whole month :) Anyway, we are back!

Jim Dine... such a popular artist for the month of February, in case you are not familiar with his work, google him. I did have print outs for the children to look at and they decided on their favorite style, not to copy though... never encourage that :) they had a limited palette of colors to work with and sponges instead of paintbrushes. So proud of the final results!

Here are the kiddo's own Jim Dine-style Valentine creations, enjoy !

Monet's Water Lilies

Over the course of the last few classes, the little ones got to learn about another one of the greatest artists- Claude Monet.... we looked at his work, discussed what he may have liked and how he painted and of course painted one of his very famous "Water Lilies"

Enjoy their completed works !!! (and initial picture of them at their easles just starting out)

Picasso !

Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.
Pablo Picasso .. Spanish Cubist Painter (1881 - 1973)

How can we not do PICASSO :) ??!!

We had so much fun... this was a two-class project. We talked about some of Picasso' works... looked at how his style changed from the earlier realistic painting to the more fun and colorful latter ones that he indeed grew famous for.
For our project, the children created their version of the famous Dora Maar
Brilliant!

A tribute to Georgia O' Keefe

Georgia O' Keeffe was an American artist with a very distinct style of painting, mainly remembered for her flowers (poppies especially) which were always large as though magnified and seen up close.

The Busy Bees were shown some of her flower paintings and we worked on drawing and painting on the same lines. They thought BIG and drew large flowers, like O'Keefe's famous paintings and then they used watercolors :)
A fitting tribute to a fantastic painter :)

Henri Matisse cutouts again :)

The next batch did the Henri Matisse cut-outs... brilliant work and a whole lot of fun!
It was rather nice to see them all choose different shapes for the pictures... heart, star, semi-circle, triangle... a different class, a different outlook :)

As you can see, the Henri Matisse class was a super-hit with the little Busy Bees last week
They cut shapes from colored paper, had some shapes made by me, and then it was all them with paint and oil pastels as they created their own masterpieces.
They had a ball trying to pronounce "Henri Matisse" (in french) and learnt that it was not as easy as it seemed just having an assistant help with the art (as Matisse actually did)

Great learning and great art!

Henri Matisse, France (1869 - 1954)

The above works are from the latter part of Henri's life when he was diagnosed with cancer and then was confined to a wheelchair.

He developed his own style (don't they all) where he would cut out various organic shapes and then have his assistants place them according to his directions; can you imagine how frustrating and time-consuming it might have been at times? a little left, no 180 degrees, the BLUE ONE!!!! MERDE !

The Bees will be tackling easy Matisse cut outs.. check back soon on our little artists
